For The Filling
 5 Nos Of Thattu Vadai
 5 Nos Of Murukku
 2 Nos Of Onion
 1 No Of Carrot
 1 No Of Beetroot
 ¼ Cup Of Mint & Coriander Leaves
 1 tbsp Lemon Juice
 2 tsp Roasted Peanuts
For The Base
 20 Nos Of Thattai (small size)
For The Green Chutney
 ¼ Cup of Coriander Leaves
 ¼ Cup of Mint Leaves
 5 Nos Of Green Chilies
 1 Inch of Ginger
 1 tbsp Lemon Juice
 Required Amount of Salt
For The Red Chutney
 10 Nos Of Red Chilies
 1 No Of Onion
 10 Cloves Of Garlic
 1 tsp Cooking Oil
 ½ tsp Tamarind

How To Make Salem Thattu Vadai Set Recipe

Grate The Vegetables And Soak The Red Chilies

Grate the carrots, beets,onion, coriander and mint after washing them well. Soak the red chilies in a quarter cup of hot water and keep aside.

Take a bowl and drop in the measured quantities of thattai and murruku and pound them using a pestle.

Throw in the grated veggies and plop in a tablespoon of green chutney and two tablespoons of red chutney along with the required salt.

Squeeze a little lemon and sprinkle some lush green coriander and mint leaves and mix altogether.

Stir in for a while and now the filling is ready.

Make The Thattu Vadai Set

Take a full small sized thattai and apply green chutney on one side and place two or three spoonfuls of the filling and top it up with a few (roughly crushed) peanuts and onion bits.

Take another Thattai and smear a lavish spread of red chutney over it and place it on top of the filling and now the thattu vadai set is ready. Similarly make the other sets and arrange it in a serving plate and serve fresh.

For Making The Green Chutney

Take a blender and throw in the measured quantities of mint, coriander and green chilies and a piece of ginger with the required amount of salt.

Blend it to a smooth paste and squirt in with a few drops of lemon juice and keep aside.

For Making the Red Chutney

Take out the soaked red chilies and drop them in a blender with a little water.

Tip in some onion and garlic cloves and a small piece of ginger and blend them into a smooth paste after adding the required amount of salt.

Transfer it to a bowl and add a pinch of chaat masala powder and cumin powder.

Finally squirt in a teaspoon of hot sesame oil and mix altogether well.

Now the spicy red chutney is ready.

Tips And Tricks To Make Salem Thattu Vadai Set Recipe

  • Store bought thattai will suffice to make Thattu vadai and usually small or medium size is preferred to make the dish.
  • There are many versions of making the red chutney and here I have given you the basic version and you can do with your regular version of red chutney.
  • Similarly, there are many versions of making Thattu Vadi that may differ from region to region though the basic ingredients are the same.
  • At some places they use kaara boondis and murukku bits to spruce it up and you can add any other stuff according to your liking and creativity.
  • Prepare it as and when required and if you make for kids you can even add some sprouts and legumes as additional ingredients and it is purely optional.
