Susiyam Recipe

Susiyam is a delicious south Indian delicacy from chetinad, tamil nadu. Susiyam recipe is a vegetarian sweet dish, which is prepared for several Indian festivals especially Diwali.

 1 cup Maida Flour
 1 cup Jaggery
 1 cup Chana Dal (Kadalai parupu in Tamil)
 1 cup Grated Coconut
 ½ tsp Cardamom Powder
 1 tbsp Ghee
 a pinch of salt
 Water as required

How To Make Susiyam - The Batter

To make Susiyam batter, Take a cup of chana dal in a thick bottomed cooker and pour two and a half cups of water in it and close it with the lid.

Once the steam comes, put the whistle. switch off the stove after 3 whistles.

Open the lid after all the steam goes off. Just ensure that the chana dal is cooked well and keep it aside.

Heat a pan and put the measured quantity of jaggery into it and add a little water. Let it melt and boil for one or two minutes.

Now strain the jaggery and keep it.

Take a vessel and add the cooked chan a dal, grated coconut, melted jaggery and a pinch of cardamom powder and mash it well.

Keep the vessel in the stove and stir well till the mixture becomes completely thick. Remove from the stove and let it cool.

Make small equal sized balls out of it and keep it in a plate. Prepare a thick batter by mixing the maida flour with a pinch of salt and a little water.

To make susiyam, place a frying pan and pour the required quantity of cooking oil in it and let it heat for sometime.

Now dip the chana dal balls into the maida batter and put it into the oil one by one.

Let it become golden brown and now flip the balls to the other side and cook similarly.

Take it out when both the sides become crispy and golden brown.

Spread a paper towel over a flat plate and spread the susiyam or the suyyam balls over it, to absorb excess oil.

Serve it hot with a hot filter coffee
