An Insight Into Raw Papaya Soup:

Raw Papaya Soup is a simple yet nutritious vegan soup that instantly gives you energy and detoxifies your body within a fortnight. This raw papaya soup is a traditional recipe from the Ancient Indian Cuisine much known for its therapeutic properties and system cleansing nature. Surprisingly, raw papaya is highly nutritious and tastier than the papaya fruit and one of the key ingredients that has been used to make delicious dishes since several decades in India. Though it is popular all over the country it is widely used in the Sates of Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka,Kerala and Orissa in the making of several dishes like soups, salads, curries, stir fries, gravies, sabzis and chutneys and also used to prepare jams, jellies and preservatives.

Its scientific name is Carica Papaya and it belongs to the Caricaceae family and it is also called as Papaw or Pawpaw. Though all the parts of papaya are beneficial the raw papaya plays a major role in Ayurvedic treatments. Raw Papaya is used like squash  in the Indian cooking and it is one of the important vegetables that holds a lot of health benefits within.  The unripe papaya consists of a milky juice that produces a protein digesting enzyme called papain which helps to break down protein fats and acts as a remedy for indigestion and from ancient times it has been used as a  popular meat tenderiser for the digestive properties it holds.

Our ancestors were very much aware of the value of raw papaya that they incorporated this vegetable in their day today cooking. Due to so many factors lots of things have changed over time, and the value and importance of ancient tradition and habits suffered a setback and had a great influence on the food habits too. For example, our present generation does not know much about the benefits of raw papaya as much as  they know about the fruit and most of us have never tasted it at all in any form even once whereas our ancestors consumed it regularly and even made sweets and savories out of it.

In olden days, Raw Papaya was given as a home remedy for kids suffering from Jaundice, Typhoid and chickenpox. Much interestingly, pickles were made out of raw papaya and were used to get rid of sea sickness and vomiting during long travel. It is used to treat gastrointestinal problems and prevents constipation to a greater extent. The enzymes present in raw papaya heals wounds and rectifies skin pigmentation. Moreover, it is a boon for lactating mothers as it is a Galactagogue (natural stimulant for milk secretion) and reduces menstrual pain too. It is a remedy for common ailments like migraine, hypertension and diabetes and a well known cure for dengue fever.

Ingredients Required To make Raw Papaya Soup Recipe

 1 Cup Of Raw Papaya
 ¼ Cup Of Shallots
 2 Pieces of Yellow Pumpkin
 5 Nos Of Garlic Pods
 1 tsp Jeera Seeds
 1 Pinch of Turmeric Powder
 ½ tsp Butter
 1 tsp Fresh Cream
 2 Nos of Cloves
 ¼ tsp Black Pepper Powder

How To Make Raw Papaya Soup Recipe

Peel And Chop The Raw Papaya

Take a small half ripened papaya (greenish light orange)and peel off the skin after washing it well.

Take a small portion and chop them into small chunks and drop them in a small wok.

Take a quarter cup of shallots and four or five garlic pods and peel the skin off and add it to the wok.

Similarly add the measured quantities of yellow pumpkin chunks and cumin seeds into it.

Finally tip in a pinch of turmeric powder and sprinkle the required salt.

At last add one and a half cups of water and pop the lid on and turn on the flame.

Let it boil for ten minutes approximately and when it turns aromatic just turn off the flame and let it cool for a while.

After it cools down, transfer it to a blender and blitz for two or three pulses and make a smooth puree out of it.

Place the wok again and when it is heated tip in half a teaspoon of butter and when it starts to melt tip in one or two cloves and after a second, just plop in the semi solid raw papaya puree and stir in.

When it comes to a boil in a minute or two, just sprinkle some black pepper powder and squirt in a teaspoon of fresh cream and turn the flame off.

Serve it hot on a rainy evening along with some roasted bread crumbs.

Tips and Tricks To Make Raw Papaya Soup Recipe

  • You can either use full green raw papaya to make this soup or you can use greenish orange raw papaya and both tastes equally good. The former will have a light green colour and the latter will have a light orange creamy color and both tastes delicious.
  • We add one or two pumpkin chunks just to blend the soup to get a thick consistency as it is the traditional way too.
  • But you can also use a quarter teaspoon of corn flour instead of pumpkin chunks to make the soup thicker.
  • Similarly, you can also use ghee in place of butter and in case if you are preparing it exclusively for elderly people you can use just a little oil instead.
  • Adding of tomato is for the tanginess and color and it is  purely optional.  You can actually make the soup without it and you can add one or two drops of lemon while serving and it tastes awesome.
  • If you introduce this raw papaya soup to children make the colorful version and top it up with roasted bread crumbs and a lavish spread of fresh cream.
