Munagaku Pappu is an authentic Andra dish which is known for its deliciousness and nutrition. It is made of drumstick leaves cooked in Tuvar dhal and spruced up with regular Indian spices. Munagaku pappu recipe is popular in all the regions of Andra Pradesh and it goes well with rice and roti. India being the largest producer of Moringa, has the privilege of inventing several Moringa based dishes in different cuisines and no wonder moringa leaves occupy an exclusive place in the gastronomic history of the country. Of all the moringa based dishes, this Munagaku pappu is one of the famous drumstick leaf based dhal gravy from the Hydrabadi Cuisine.

Munagaku pappu recipe is loaded with a lot of nutrition as it has dhal, vegetables and drumstick leaves as well. It is rich in protein, iron and vitamins. It not only makes the bone healthier but it also nourishes the skin and hair as the drumstick leaves has a lot of iron content in it. People of Andhra just love to have this Munagaku Pappu with steamed rice with a lavish drizzle of ghee, accompanied with Gongura chutney and tomato pickle. Unlike the popular belief that Andra based dishes always have an extra zing of spiciness, this Munagaku Pappu comes as an exception. It is less spicy and quite mild flavored when compared to other Native Andhra dishes. It has a rich taste and the unique aroma of moringa tantalizes your taste buds even in the very first bite.

Ingredients Required To Make Munagaku Pappu Recipe

Key Ingredients
 2 cups Drumstick Leaves
 1 Cup Of Tuvar Dal
 1 Onion
 1 Tomato
 5 Cloves Of Garlic
For Tempering
 1 tsp Mustard seeds
 1 tsp Cumin seeds
 2 Nos Dried Red Chillies
 1 tsp Broken Urad Dal
Other Ingredients
 1 tbsp Ghee
 Required Amount Of Salt
 Required Amount Of Water
 ½ tsp Turmeric Powder
 2 pinches Asafoetida
 1 tsp Tamarind Water

How To Make Munagaku Pappu Recipe

Cook The Dal

To make Munagaku pappu recipe, take a vessel and add the measured quantities of tuvar dal to it and place it inside a pressure cooker and turn on the stove.

Pressure cook for three to four whistles and turn off the stove.

Wash the drumstick leaves and add it to a wok and add two cups of water.

Tip in a chopped onion, tomato and a few garlic cloves to it.

Now add a few pinches of salt and half a teaspoon of turmeric and close the vessel with a lid.

Let it cook for five to seven minutes approximately.

Do The Tempering

Heat the wok again and tip in a teaspoon of ghee.

When it melts, add in a teaspoon of mustard seeds and jeera seeds to it.

When it starts spluttering, drop in one or two roughly torn dried red chilies to it.

Now add the par boiled drumstick leaves along with the veggies in it.

When the Drumstick leaves wilts, just pour in the boiled tuvar dal to it with a dash of salt.

Whisk the whole mixture together and let it boil for five minutes.

When it turns aromatic and reaches the right consistency turn off the stove.

Drizzle a spoon of ghee on top and serve it with hot steamed rice, gongura and pickle.
